Are Dealing With a Legitimate Debt Consolidation Firm?
by Ellise Walsh

These days more and more consumers are carrying more and more debt, and it is no surprise that some of them are getting in over their heads. With real wages rising little or not at all, and expenses going up every year, it is not hard to see why so many people are finding it so difficult to make ends meet and pay daily living expenses. For those consumers who find themselves in a bind with their finances, the services of a skilled and effective debt consolidation service can be just the ticket.

There are many reasons why a person may need to seek the services of a debt consolidation service. For instance, many students graduate from college with a large debt burden, and they may be looking for a way to renegotiate the terms of the loan or consolidate the debt at a lower interest rate. A sudden illness or medical problems or an unexpected job loss can also wreak havoc with one’s personal finances and necessitate debt consolidation. Debt consolidation can also help in those all too common cases where a consumer charges more to credit cards than can be comfortably repaid.

No matter what your reason for seeking debt consolidation services, there are some key things to look for in such a service. The most important feature of a debt consolidation service is a willingness and a desire to work with you. A good credit counselor will take the time to understand your unique circumstances and recommend a plan of action designed just for you. A debt consolidation service that uses the same approach for every client is probably not a good debt consolidation service.

It is also important that the debt consolidation service you choose be willing to help you learn important financial concepts like budgeting and the wise use of credit. The best debt consolidation services will include some sort of budget help or credit counseling as part of their standard service.

When interviewing debt consolidation services, you would do well to avoid the hard sell. Any debt consolidation service that makes you a “one time only”, “take it or leave it” deal is not a debt consolidation service you want to deal with. Firms that use these kinds of pressure tactics are unlikely be stick with you when you really need them. There are plenty of good debt consolidation services out there – there is no need to deal with one who makes you uncomfortable.
